Steel Panther performs on the “On The Prowl” Tour – March 21st, 2023 at The Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan – photos by Mirak Habbiyyieh
If you’re in the rock/metal scene and you don’t know who Steel Panther is by now, you’ve got to living under a rock. Steel Panther are back “On The Prowl” with an album and tour of the same name. At the Detroit stop of their tour, they came out swinging. The camaraderie that these guys have between each other is just amazing. The whole night going back and forth with jibs and jabs throughout the set. Sometimes you’d wonder if these guys really like each other.
They started the night with three classics: Eyes of a Panther, Let Me Cum In and Asian Hooker. During Asian Hooker, two asian women from the crowd, were brought on stage. These ladies enjoyed the song, as they were serenaded by Michael Starr. Steel Panther continued through their set which contained songs from almost all their albums. Between every song or two, the band would naturally rip into each other and occasionally some of the fans in attendance.
At the half way point of their set, it was time for band introductions. Starr introduced Satchel as the best guitarist in the band and then offers everyone a shot of sticks, Stix Zadina (drums). Satchel then introduces Spyder as the brand new fill in bass player and Michael Starr as their 81 year old lead singer. The ripping continued back and forth and just like some of their music videos, it’s NSFW. I guess you just had to be there. At this point, Satchel took center stage to show us why he is the best guitarist in Steel Panther, by channeling his inner Eddie Van Halen and shredding a short but sweet guitar solo.
The solo transitioned nicely right into Death To All But Metal, followed by two songs off their new album, 1987 & Ain’t Dead Yet. Proving that the 1980s were the best of times for Heavy Metal. The band decided to bring another lucky female onto the stage, Shannon-Rose was that lucky lady. As she was brought a stool to sit on, Michael Starr began to sing her, her very own song (which of course contained explicit details on what he was going to do to her sexually). Then in traditional Steel Panther form, each member of the band got a chance to sing her a special song, while each of them tried to outdo the others song. Which let to the natural progression of the song Girl From Oklahoma. After which they invited any female who was interested on stage for Party All Day (Fuck All Night).
During the encore, they dedicated Community Property to all the girlfriends and wives in the crowd. If you know, you know! While they closed the night out with Gloryhole. For those in attendance they knew what they were getting themselves in for. A night of heavy metal and comedic relief, which would offend most of the world, in todays culture. But thankfully Steel Panther are still here cracking jokes and making songs about sex, drugs & rock ‘n’ roll. So the next time you hear that Steel Panther is coming to your town, do yourself a favor and go see their show. You’ll be entertained by awesome music and comedic interludes, which will surely bring a smile your face, if not all the boobies you’ll see will.
