I often hear comparisons between Twin Shadow everything George Lewis Jr. and one Prince Rogers Nelson. And though I think there are some obvious comparisons between the two, such as their shared love of 80’s glam-wave, as well as their equally androgynous nature. I think the real comparison can be found in the fortitude put forth in each man’s work. And though Lewis Jr. has a much smaller sample size it’s easy to see that an unspeakable force drives them both.
Lewis Jr.’s newest record Confess is a welcome departure from 2010’s Forget. Don’t get me wrong; I loved Forget, I just find it much more intriguing when an artist brings a different point of view to a new record. Gone are the days of the war-tore heart, beating out of GLJ’s chest at a dance club pace. In it’s place, a steely demeanor, and a new man. Brashness now his weapon of choice, never more apparent then on the track “I Don’t Care” with which he relents “Let Me Know Your Innocent And Tell Me All The Things, Then Talk About The Parties And The Boys That You Got Undone, I Don’t Care, I Don’t Care, Long As You Can Dance Me Round The Room While You Lie To Me” and “Patient” which finds him belting out “Baby You Don’t Want No One To Find Out That I Am Kissing You, Baby You Don’t Want No One To Find Out That I Was The One Taking Love From You.”
So now as Lewis Jr. ventures forth into this, his brave new world, you can’t help but wonder if he’ll be able to hold onto his well-manicured mystique, all the while shaking off those Prince comparisons while attempting to be his own man. I personally think he can, though there’s no doubt in my mind that he does love the fame, stating in an interview recently that his reasoning for adorning his Confess’ cover with well… himself was because “I’m a good-looking guy, so there’s an attractive male on the cover of my record… I dig the way I look because I dig the places I come from.” But hey nobody said you didn’t need confidence to survive in this game, so I guess we’ll see just how far it’ll take him.
