Having
seen this band just last year, I pretty much knew how
they would perform. I mean an established act like 311
that has been touring in big venues for years now, how
could they have changed their live performance from
just 6 months. The beauty of this concert was that it's
not all just one scene that comes out to support these
guys. You have a mix of some punk rock kids, the metal
kids, long time fans, and of course the teenie-bopper
TRL crowd that scream at painful decibels. There will
always be a mixed crowd and I love that about their
music.
Back
to 311's actual performance, they pulled off another
great set. What surprised me was that they were even
tighter (music wise) than before. Yet I didn't really
notice anything off about the last show, maybe the slight
change in the set list or even the very cool drum solo
that I actually caught this time was the deciding factor
in liking this tour better.
Another
great addition was lighting rigs. This added a great
element that the other show lacked in comparison. The
strobes, on the other hand, were a nuisance and could've
been used sparily especially in the crowds direction.
Other than that, the lighting set up was wonderful and
really added a lot to the overall show; it was a treat
just to watch the actual lighting rigs themselves.
As
you can see by the picture of the set list, they played
a nice variety of songs off their entire catalog. I
personally would like to see more stuff off Grassroots
and Music but supporting a new album is the whole point
of the tour, to display these new songs live that no
one has heard live before. The way this band tours,
I'm sure they'll be back around for another go at it
at the State Theatre with hopefully a slight tweak in
the lighting design and a brand new record to support.
